CUEA participated in a panel discussion titled “Communicating During High-Stakes Moments,” alongside leaders from the California Public Utilities Commission, California Water Service, and Liberty Utilities.
The discussion focused on lessons learned from recent emergency events, including major wildfire incidents, and explored what separates effective emergency communications from ineffective communications during rapidly evolving situations.
Panelists discussed key topics including:
• Maintaining credibility when information is incomplete
• Establishing communication priorities during the first hour of an incident
• Coordinating messaging across multiple organizations
• Supporting public trust during emergency events
• Preparing communication teams before disasters occur
CUEA also shared how utilities can strengthen preparedness efforts through planning, training, and participation in mutual assistance and coordination networks before emergencies occur.
The session provided valuable insights for utility leaders, emergency managers, and communications professionals responsible for supporting their communities during crises.
